One of the hardest things we will ever be asked to do, is to rest. Just rest.
I know. Resting is difficult to justify when there’s so much to do around the house, at the office, in the ministry, amidst the relationships we have. So we often keep pushing on, ignoring all the warning signs that we need to rest.
Google defines “Rest” as:
(verb) cease work or movement in order to relax, refresh oneself, or recover strength.
(noun) an instance or period of relaxing or ceasing to engage in strenuous or stressful activity.
What’s interesting about this definition is how much it parallels the way in which God speaks of it in His Word. He has planted the word REST everywhere! I only have room in this post to reference it a few times.
Who needs rest? Everybody does.
God needed it…Genesis 2:2- “God rested (ceased) from all His work”
Kings needed it…Psalm 23:2- “He lets me rest in green meadows”
Jesus needed it…Mark 4:38- “Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion”
Jesus’ apostles needed it…Mark 6:31b- “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest”
We need it…
Exodus 16:23- “Tomorrow (the Sabbath) is to be a day of rest”
Matthew 11:28- “Come to me all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest”
Revelation 14:13b- “they will rest from their labor”
Deuteronomy 12:12- “and He will give you rest”
How does depending on God’s rest benefit us?
His rest is Promised– Hebrews 4:3- “Now we who believe enter His rest”
His rest is Restorative– Isaiah 40:31- “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint”
His rest is Protective– I Kings 5:4- “The Lord my God has given me rest on every side, and there is no adversary or disaster”
His rest is Present– Exodus 33:14 “My presence will go with you and I will give you rest”
His rest is Trustworthy– 1 John 3:19- “This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in His presence whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our heart, and He knows everything”
His rest is Victorious– Psalm 62:1,5- “Truly my soul finds rest in God, my salvation comes from Him…yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from Him”
One thing I know for sure is that if God sees fit to use a word many times over in His Bible, it’s best to pay attention. When I read the multitude of scriptures referring to rest, two themes jump out at me.
- It matters to God that we rest our bodies, minds, and souls
- It matters even more to God that we find that rest in Him
The next time you are tempted to toss aside the need to rest, grab ahold of these truths so you aren’t deceived by the hustle and chaos of the go go go. All that begs to be done around the house, at the office, in the ministry and amidst your relationships will benefit greatly when you take the time to rest in the One who Provides it!
